Disidentification: Remembering Wholeness Beyond Survival

Understanding Disidentification

Disidentification is a psychological and philosophical process that allows individuals to create a necessary distance between their maladaptive survival instincts and identity. Identification is then used to align identity with inherent wholeness.

The Journey from Identification to Alignment

In modern society, many find themselves confined within identities shaped by external pressures through societal expectations and ways we've learned to best manage situations. When these identities dictate our behaviors and choices, particularly when we're completely unaware, they control our lives and prevent authentic expression and interaction. Disidentification creates a valuable space to reflect on these imposed identities, allowing us to remember that we are whole, spiritual beings having human experiences. Identification then invites us to intentionally align with this wholeness, growing and healing with every moment of [dis]identification.

Embracing Wholeness and Authenticity

Choosing alignment with our wholeness is a transformative process. It involves recognizing and acknowledging the various aspects of our identity; those that resonate with our true self and those that are merely survival responses. By engaging in disidentification, one can actively question the narratives that have been internalized and begin to rewrite them. This shift not only enriches personal understanding but also enhances interpersonal connections. As we embrace our authentic selves, we become able to interact with others and all environments with relentless, calm confidence in who we are and how we show up.

This practice is a way to grow by shedding the layers of masking and protection. There is no need to change, but remember exactly who we are, always have been and always will be.
